Banyan Group Strengthens European Presence with the Launch of Mamula Island Retreat in Montenegro

Banyan Group, the independent global hospitality company known for its purpose-driven growth, has expanded its European footprint with the addition of Mamula Island by Banyan Tree: a secluded retreat set on a private islet in Montenegro’s UNESCO-listed Boka Bay. Open for the 2025 season, the resort welcomes guests to discover its natural splendor and unique identity, ahead of a full reimagining aligned with Banyan Tree’s signature hospitality style in 2026.

A Strategic Milestone for Purposeful Growth

“We are thrilled to welcome Mamula Island into the Banyan Group family,” said Eddy See, President and CEO of Banyan Group. “This milestone reflects our long-term commitment to thoughtful expansion developing immersive destinations that celebrate their local culture and environment while offering exceptional guest experiences.”

This move underscores Banyan Group’s focus on sustainable growth and long-term value creation for its global audience of guests, partners, and host communities.

A Vision Decades in the Making

Mamula Island is a passion project for entrepreneur Samih Sawiris, whose longstanding connection to Montenegro includes the landmark development of Luštica Bay.

“My first glimpse of Mamula was over a decade ago, while scouting for land to develop Luštica Bay,” he recalls. “Since then, I’ve envisioned transforming the island into a beacon for the region. Today, it stands as a gateway to the bay and a symbol of what Montenegro’s future in luxury hospitality can be.”

The hotel will remain open throughout 2025 and will undergo a full transformation in 2026 to reflect the refined design, wellness-focused programming, and guest rituals that define the Banyan Tree experience.

A Heritage Fortress Turned Island Sanctuary

Nestled within a lovingly restored 19th-century fortress, the retreat offers panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea, surrounded by untamed coastal scenery. The restoration, completed two years ago, was a collaborative effort between local and international architects and conservationists, ensuring that the integrity and character of the historic site remain intact.

Guests arrive via private boat across Boka Bay or by helicopter from Dubrovnik or Tivat, offering a dramatic entrance and sweeping aerial views of Montenegro’s rugged shoreline.

A Guest Experience Rooted in Nature, Craft, and Culture

Cultural Immersion & Private Events Guests can connect with the region’s artistic heritage through curated exhibitions and seasonal performances in collaboration with the Operosa music festival. The island is also available for exclusive use, ideal for destination weddings, private retreats, or bespoke gatherings.

A Symbol of Regenerative Hospitality

Mamula Island joins Banyan Group’s expanding portfolio of meaningful destinations, representing a fusion of heritage, sustainability, and luxury.
