Thanks to her multiple talents, Angela Tunner, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the magazine EAT LOVE SAVOR®, has been working for several decades in the world of luxury, giving it the dynamism and vision of an enthusiast with a 360 ° look. More than a way of life, luxury is for her a total experience, both personal and collective, and a real education in beauty, excellence and perfection. The editorial line of EAT LOVE SAVOR®, which comes in print on demand and online, disseminates this spirit of epicurean esthete that no great establishment and no exceptional product escapes. It is with immense joy and deep gratitude that Vendôm talks today with Angela Tunner, our wonderful partner, but also an inspiration for our network.
Vendom.jobs - How did you enter the luxury world?
Angela Tunner - As long as I can remember, understanding luxury and having a luxurious mindset was something I was born with. Engaging in luxurious thinking and self-expression came easily. I furthered this innate understanding with 30 years of independent study about the actors, brands and history and this study is ongoing.
I simply entered into the professional world of luxury naturally and independently when I began my luxury magazine EAT LOVE SAVOR® over a decade ago. But there is so much more to the story, which stretches back over 30 years when I created the lifestyle concept, the mindset and approach to living, which was created whilst sitting in the lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto, drinking in the atmosphere, reverse engineering what it was about their environment that made me feel so good and what was it about it that made it so luxurious.
I have multi-disciplined experience which enriches my luxury adventures, in a wide variety of fields which makes me uniquely qualified to do what I do, as a Founder, Editor-in-Chief, Creative Director and Publisher, plus many other hats. By bringing to it so much knowledge and skills, which includes experience in hospitality, culinary arts and fine wine and spirits, mass media communications, radio and voice over, retail and window dressing, fine arts, ISO9000 quality control and manufacturing, advertising and marketing for financial firms, web design, graphic arts, art direction, layouts, book publishing and brand creation just to name just a few, all of this experience and skill development factors into everything I do in luxury and beyond.
This incredible life and learning journey came into play following an intuitive feeling in late 2008 / early 2009 that the time had arrived to start to bring EAT LOVE SAVOR to life. So I created the brand, trademarked the name (it is a formally registered trademark since 2017) and decided upon the medium of a magazine, which I felt provided the perfect platform upon which to build it up, so I started building it. All with the vision to develop many potential legs down the road. We launched in the summer of 2010 online and our traffic increased by the first month by 1400%. We are now read by millions of people, in over 70 countries, made lists of must-follow luxury magazines, are distributed in over 900 high-end hotels, 25 airlines in first and business class and reach a growing private community and extensive network as I continue my adventures in luxury and gather more like-minded people and brands, creating something even more exciting together.
As we continue to develop the EAT LOVE SAVOR luxury lifestyle brand, the magazine website and the bookazine which is in print on demand and ships worldwide bridging history and modernity with humanity, we are venturing off the page. There is more exciting growth underway which includes luxury affinity marketing and adding new mediums to the EAT LOVE SAVOR® luxury lifestyle media brand. Additional details released in due course.
V.J. - Who inspired you?
A. T. - As a single mother, I am inspired by my son. He is a driving force behind my desire to do something bold and to show him that a woman can do something extraordinary whilst still being a dedicated mother and parent. I started all of this before he started his schooling, and now he is nearing the end of secondary education; he’s been a witness to it and supporter of it from the beginning.
In addition to the inspiration he provides, there are a great many individuals and subjects that provide inspiration. I read every kind of subject and look everywhere to learn from different disciplines and perspectives. From reading books on history, art, art history, biographies of people like Coco Chanel, her success story is very inspiring and other successful individuals, books about business, self-improvement, health and alternative healing, wealth mindset, history, various cultures and lifestyle and much more.
My passion for luxury itself also inspires and to learn about it’s past, present and looking to the future. I am also inspired by beauty and a love for acquiring knowledge.
V.J. - Why did you create EAT LOVE SAVOR?
A. T. - I wanted to talk about luxury and the luxury market from a different perspective. We believe that luxury is a state of mind and approach to living. EAT LOVE SAVOR® offers more meaning and connection to the human side of luxury. More “edutainment” and an abundance of substance. We were ahead of the curve with being digital first and being focused on a different side of luxury. Now with sustainability and experience being more the focus, we remain dedicated to our editorial mandate, direction, mission and vision.
I dreamed of creating an extraordinary luxurious world that swept you away into an atmosphere of supreme comfort, with beautiful surroundings to joyfully lift the spirits, that satisfied the need for elegant entertainment in refinement with valuable information. Disconnected from commercialism and imbued with love, passion, value and enchantment.
A magazine was the ideal medium to deliver the message, but it had to be ad-free in order to best freely express and share thoughts, ideas and visuals and in order to form a sophisticated community in a rarefied world where luxury is disconnected from consumerism and reconnected with humanity. It is created with all the tiers of wealth in mind. We are supported by our readers and luxury community. From this beginning we evolved and the time has come for more.
EAT LOVE SAVOR® International Luxury Lifestyle Magazine & Bookazine is now a growing global luxury community and high-end publication beyond the ordinary. Written for the luxury aficionado, focused on the essence of luxury, connoisseurship and appreciation.
In the words of one of our luxury community members: “Going through EAT LOVE SAVOR magazine and bookazine is like entering a world where everything is enchanting. Everyone can only dream and be fascinated while experiencing the ongoing unfolding of delicious sensations. The wonderful quote from Baudelaire who wrote: "There, all is order and beauty, luxury, calm and voluptuousness" applies wonderfully to your beautiful publications!”
We welcome luxury aficionados from all tiers of wealth to join our luxury community for full access + and partake in private services.
V.J- With your publication, what kind of inspiration do you want to introduce into the world of luxury?
A. T. - I dreamed of creating an inspiring oasis of luxury. To provide inspiration and raise the understanding that engaging in a luxurious lifestyle can be a catalyst to return to self. Be a platform that puts quality ahead of quantity. We aim to be the place where luxury aficionados come to be educated about luxury across a broad spectrum, to learn more about how to use luxury to mindfully reconnect with our senses in luxury moments, to help create a more holistic engagement with luxury in our lives seen through a feminine lens.
There is more to us as people, than being a vehicle to contribute to society as a consumer. We are citizens of the world all looking for love and to be loved. There is so much more to luxury than acquisition, so I wanted to introduce a more liberated, values driven, educative, intelligent, sophisticated, sensual and emotionally connective way to look at and to engage with luxury and the actors in the sector. In a world disconnected from the shackles of constant consumerism, that can be instead infused with happiness, love, joy that offers a value culture for conscious consumerism that espouses a lifestyle that puts humanity back into luxury.
V.J. - Could you tell us more about your Elite Partners?
A. T. - The best means of marketing has always been word of mouth and connections; we especially support this as an advert-free platform, independent media and high-end publication. EAT LOVE SAVOR® prefers partnerships for the luxury goods, services and experiences that match with our readers desires.
Over the years, we have come to know and love so many luxury brands and the people behind them, from small ateliers through multinational companies. We wanted to offer them all something more, especially for the independent brands, a place for support and opportunity so that we not only wrote about luxury, but were instrumental in creating new markets.
The inspiration behind our decision to focus on independent media was an idealist one with a desire to be more than a mere magazine and bring luxury publications directly to the reader and laser targeted via partnerships not newsstands.
The result – Elite Partners, an affinity forged brand bond, selecting and creating a better understanding of each luxury brand, and partnering with brands, their public relations, and other businesses, thereby creating a full circle of B2C and B2B opportunities.
Especially now during this challenging time, to gather brands of similar mindset targeting the same niche, fulfilling a need for support, human connection and a unifying source for inspiration, encouragement, brainstorming, and working on ideas that form win/win/win scenarios that benefit brands and bottom lines.
To be an EAT LOVE SAVORⓇ Elite Partner is to benefit from our initiatives in engaging our business partners in an ecosystem of business excellence and development. We believe in the power of partnerships. Our partners are made up of select elite luxury goods, services and experiences from around the world.
Luxury brands interested in joining the Elite Partners are welcomed to fill out our online form to contact us and introduce themselves.
V.J. - After more than a decade, EAT LOVE SAVOR® remains a reference to the sector despite the increase of reviews dedicated to luxury. What is the recipe for success of EAT LOVE SAVOR?
A. T. - I am so pleased to be a reference to the sector. It is an honour. We are glad that our publication and message resonates with them. We warmly welcome actors in the luxury sector to introduce themselves and encourage them to get in touch with us and introduce themselves. We are also open to their opinion editorial and have guest contributor opportunities available to them.
Indeed, there are a great many reviews of luxury all around the world several of which have come and gone during the past decade. Our recipe for success we believe is attributed in part to the fact that we broke with the norms for magazines which we feel are in alignment with changing tastes in luxury, in media and publications, including doing away with advertising and setting out with a mission, vision, purpose, values, and a strict editorial mandate and direction; all from which we have not deviated.
We remain dedicated to continuing our review and expanding upon the brand in as many ways as best fit with our essence and the desires of our global readership.
V.J. - We are certainly at a turning point of the industry. What could be, in your opinion, the future of luxury?
A. T. - Right now is an incredible time in luxury. It is a real turning point that I think is the new epoch for luxury that is about bridging the gap between history, heritage and modernity and putting humanity back into luxury.
V.J. - What are the keystones of luxury that will never change?
A. T. - Luxury is a culture and a very deep concept. I’ve always believed defining "luxury" is a complex matter because luxury simply “is” and it incorporates tangible and intangible and there are great depths of both.
Firstly, on the basic level there is the dictionary definition, "a material object, service, etc., conducive to sumptuous living, usually a delicacy, elegance, or refinement of living rather than a necessity." And going deeper luxury is a concept that has many facets:
- Luxury, the business model
- Luxury, the personal experience, of which is highly subjective that forms a definition on a personal level.
- Luxury as it pertains to cost, which is also subjective
- Luxury as it pertains to goods
- Luxury as it pertains to experiences and lifestyle
- Luxury as it pertains to connection to emotion
- Luxury as it pertains to personalization
- Luxury as it pertains to excellence and legacy
I agree with the way that the pillars of luxury are explained in the book Meta-luxury Brands and the Culture of Luxury by Manfredi Ricca and Rebecca Robins (Interbrand, published by Palgrave Macmillan, 2012). Where these keystones or pillars of luxury are concerned, they vary from the two different ‘perspectives’, from those of both the Maker and the Customer.
The pillars of luxury, what they refer to as “meta-luxury” or true luxury, differ from the perspective of the Maker and the Customer.
The Maker’s Perspective of the pillars of luxury are Definition: (what meta-luxury is ultimately about) Unique achievement. Principles (of creation): Knowledge, Purpose, Timelessness.
The Customers Perspective of the pillars (drivers of demand) of luxury are: Craftsmanship, Focus, History, Rarity.
I believe these pillars will not change.
V. J. - What makes you able to keep the fire burning?
A. T. - Remembering that a career is a marathon, not a sprint is important because those fires will dim from time to time and need to be fired up again.
To fire myself up, I am taking time to luxuriate, feed the soul, time in nature to relax the mind and seek inspiration from reading great books, watching movies of all kinds and listening to wonderful music (favorites are classical, opera and jazz), visiting art galleries and museums, hotel visits and staycations, dining on sumptuous foods, sleeping and lounging in bed taking time to enjoy resting, filling my home with fresh flowers, a little bit of gardening, time with loved ones laughing and enjoying each other company, drawing and painting from time to time or creating crafts by hand and other leisurely pursuits all provide salve for the soul and inspiration and are invigorating to no end to help keep the passions alive.
V.J. - What is your personal luxury?
A. T. - Great comforts, everything I need at my fingertips, total olfactory moments that engage my senses and allow for luxuriation, moments typically mundane that I make luxuriously marvellous.
