For the second consecutive year, Cartier is set to unveil the doors of its Jewellery Institute, welcoming the public during the European Heritage Days from September 16th to 17th, 2023. This unique opportunity will allow approximately 200 visitors to delve into the captivating realm of jewellery making and experience the unparalleled expertise that defines Cartier.
The Cartier Jewellery Institute, established in 2002 within an 18th-century mansion located in the heart of Paris's historic jewellery district, plays a pivotal role in training artisans. Each year, it provides training for 150 craftspeople out of the 340 working in France, covering all aspects of jewellery craftsmanship. Cartier was among the pioneers in the luxury industry to create a center exclusively dedicated to preserving and advancing the expertise of its craftsmanship.
Visitors will embark on an immersive journey within the Institute, divided into small groups of twelve, exploring the three floors of the historic building. The guided tour offers a unique opportunity to witness the intricate processes involved in jewellery making, from gem-cutting and mounting to polishing. Additionally, the tour will unveil lesser-known techniques such as glyptics and casting, placing a spotlight on these artforms.
In this second edition, Cartier has also made a special effort to connect aspiring young artisans directly with craftspeople. During the tour, these artisans will share their passion, backgrounds, and daily routines, offering invaluable insights to those considering a career in this extraordinary field.
Visitors will have the chance to experience jewellery making firsthand and participate in the creation of a collaborative piece featuring the iconic Cartier panther emblem.
Participating in the European Heritage Days aligns with Cartier's ongoing commitment to promote and develop the expertise and crafts of jewellery making. This includes preserving traditional techniques like mounting and glyptics, which Cartier upholds and continues, as well as newer know-how driven by cutting-edge technologies like digital design, shaping the future of jewellery craftsmanship.
Last year, Cartier collaborated with the Haute Ecole de Joaillerie (HEJ) to co-create the world's first Digital Bachelor's Degree, underscoring the Maison's dedication to perpetuating traditional knowledge while embracing the potential of modern technology. Cartier also maintains close partnerships with schools in the ecosystem to nurture the jewellers of tomorrow.
In its efforts to transmit skills and offer training to future artisan jewellers, Cartier hosts 50 work-study students and interns each year. Notably, the company has doubled its intake of these students and trainees in the current year.
