The EarthCheck certification process involved an extensive audit over a 12-month period, covering a wide array of practices across the resorts, including the Manele Golf Course and laundry facilities. This thorough evaluation measured the properties’ efforts against international sustainability standards, creating a path forward for further action and improvement.
The resorts successfully demonstrated their commitment to innovation and sustainability through operational practices, resulting in this inaugural certification. Their achievements span cultural, economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
Avi Phookan, General Manager of Four Seasons Resort Lanai, shared, “Our entire team plays a role in implementing sustainable practices, from water-efficient management on our golf course to partnering with eco-conscious vendors. Among our key accomplishments are eliminating single-use packaging for amenities, replacing plastic with bamboo products in the spa, and removing plastics from in-room dining service.” Phookan also highlighted an innovative food waste reduction project using AI technology from Winnow, which helps track food waste generated by both guests and staff. This data-driven approach allows the team to identify key points for intervention and reduce overall waste.
In line with the brand’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship, the Four Seasons For Good program brings together numerous sustainability initiatives and community-focused efforts into a unified strategy to drive even greater positive impact.
Additional sustainability measures on Lanai include offering guests complimentary, mineral-safe Project Reef sunscreen at the pool and beach kiosks, as well as maintaining reef-friendly, organic landscaping. Maui Nui Marine Resource Council has recognized the property’s dedication to sustainability with its Gold Certification for these efforts.
David Emig, General Manager of Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort, stated, “We’re deeply committed to enhancing our community impact and environmental preservation. Through our Love Lanai Culture Team, we’ve led several initiatives, including community moon nights and beach cleanups. We’ve also hosted the Kānehūnāmoku Voyaging Academy, offering educational opportunities for guests and residents to explore ancient Hawaiian navigation techniques. Additionally, our collaboration with the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology has allowed guests to participate in scientific research aimed at improving reef and water quality.”
The Four Seasons Resorts Lanai remain focused on protecting the island’s environment while honoring and sharing its rich cultural history. Their commitment to resource conservation, sustainable partnerships, and ongoing staff education helps maintain respect for the island’s natural and cultural heritage. Through the Love Lanai program, guests are invited to immerse themselves in the island’s unique ecosystem and over 1,000 years of Hawaiian cultural legacy, with a range of authentic, educational experiences designed to foster appreciation and stewardship.
