The experience concludes with a magical tasting journey through some of Van Gogh’s most famous artworks at the hotel’s all-new afternoon tea, creating a memorable setting to reconnect with friends and family this season.
Hotel Café Royal’s Van Gogh Afternoon Tea celebrates the brilliance of one of history’s greatest artists. The hotel’s Head Pastry Chef, Michael Kwan, the UK pastry team president in the Coupe du Monde de la Patisserie 2019 when the team finished 5th and won the Best Sugar Piece, has meticulously crafted each item on the menu drawing inspiration from Van Gogh’s iconic paintings. After an exclusive visit to York for a private viewing of the show, Michael and his team worked closely with the team at the exhibition to harmonise the overall experience for visitors.
Sumptuous sandwiches such as Crab and Dill on Lemon Bread has been inspired by Van Gogh’s 1887 piece, Two Crabs. Alongside light-as-air scones, sweet delicacies include a Vase with Twelve Sunflowers (sunflower seed praline, salted caramel); The Starry Night (pink grapefruit compote, orange marmalade) and a pecan crunchy, coffee mousse and taro sponge Van Gogh Self-Portrait, served on its own easel.
The afternoon tea will be served in the Oscar Wilde Lounge, the very room where Oscar Wilde fell in love with Lord Alfred Douglas, Aubrey Beardsley debated with Whistler, David Bowie retired Ziggy Stardust and Mick Jagger, the Beatles and Elizabeth Taylor danced the night away.
Van Gogh: The immersive experience
Exhibition Hub in partnership with Fever, presents Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience, for a highly anticipated London run which opened on 29th July 2021. The exhibition, which has already brought joy to visitors worldwide, takes attendees on a journey through the Dutch post-impressionist artist’s life, exploring Van Gogh’s inspirations, struggles and contributions to the art world. 106 Commercial Street, a former horse and carriage repository centred around a triple-height atrium is the host venue set to turn into a live canvas this autumn.
Using the latest and most innovative technology, visitors will step into a virtual experience featuring more than 200 of Van Gogh’s sketches, drawings, and paintings. The unique experience is made possible by state-of-the-art video mapping technology, coupled with projections on the floor to create the impression for the audience of being enveloped in the art. A drawing studio and additional galleries that explore the life, works and techniques of this incredible artist create a truly digital immersive experience that provides a complete look at the artist’s life and work.
