The country now features a grand total of 374 MICHELIN-starred restaurants.

The MICHELIN Guide Italy 2020 has been released, with a celebration taking place at the Teatro Municipale in Piacenza, Italy, just south of Milan. Now in its 65th edition, the 2020 guide welcomes 30 new one-starred, two new two-starred and one new three-starred restaurants, making it the second most starred guide in the world.

“For its variety, which harmonizes regional traditions and creativity, for the richness of its products and the excellence of its chefs, Italy shines at the center of the global gastronomic scene,” says Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the MICHELIN Guides.

“Thirty-three new starred restaurants overlook the culinary scene offering their own personal testimony of the infinite variations of the Bel Paese kitchen. Above all, the new three-star restaurant Enrico Bartolini shines at the Mudec, where the chef's personality stands out for research and experimentation, blending perfectly with Milan's dynamism and giving an artist's touch to the rich Italian gastronomic heritage.”

There are two newly-minted two-starred restaurants that deserve a detour: La Madernassa, in Guarene in the province of Cuneo, where Michelangelo Mammoliti proposes a cuisine that has become an essential stop in the circuit of great restaurants of the region, is one of them. Here, the dishes express rigor, technique and precision, but the soul comes from Piedmontese tradition and products that are personally cultivated by Michelangelo in the restaurant's garden.

Glam by Enrico Bartolini in Venice also receives two stars in the 2020 edition. Imagination is added to local recipes reinterpreted by the inspiration of chef Donato Ascani. His proposal is a solemn synthesis between creativity and instinct inspired daily by local ingredients with Asian influences and local aromatic herbs.

The region of Lombardy sees the most stars, with three three-star, five two-star and 54 one-star establishments. Piedmont remains in second place, with 46 starred restaurants, four of which are new, while Campania takes third place with 44 starred restaurants.

"Year after year, the Guide notes that the extraordinary nature of our cuisine lies in the excellence of the products, in the traditions rooted in the territory and in the capacity to innovate,” says Sergio Lovrinovich, director of the MICHELIN Guide Italy. “Maybe it's ‘everything here,’ but being simple and at the same time innovative is hard work, which requires perseverance, passion and collaboration. Congratulations, therefore, to all the chefs and their teams who highlight the Italian gastronomic scene, which can be proud of its 374 starred restaurants."
