Umbral, Curio Collection by Hilton adds to the company portfolio with a painstakingly restored and modernized masterpiece in downtown Mexico City

Mexico City has a new Hilton. The Umbral, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, marks the debut of a strikingly restored, circa 1924 historic hotel in the city’s colorful and lively downtown area as part of an ambitious government program to restore historical buildings throughout all of Mexico.

The modern 59-room boutique hotel is the latest addition to Curio Collection by Hilton, reinforcing the growth of its portfolio of one-of-a-kind hotels and resorts in premier destinations across the Caribbean and Latin America.
The 59-room heritage building overlooks the Mexico City’s most emblematic buildings, including the Metropolitan Cathedral, the County Hall and El Palacio de Hierro Department Store. Guests will also have convenient access to Zocalo Main Square just two blocks away, as well as Museo del Templo Mayor, Chapultepec and Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juarez – less than five miles from the property.

The hotel brings a contemporary design by renowned local architect Javier Sanche.  Find sleek, minimalistic furniture in neutral tones in white, beige and brown, as well as natural materials such as light and dark woods. Guest rooms offer two distinct environments – a darker intimate entrance that leads to a light guest room through a golden frame. Each of the 12 suites also has a record player with a personalized vinyl collection – based on guests’ preferences – through a partnership with local vinyl shop La Roma Records.

Art at the Heart of it

As the city’s only hotel with an on-site gallery, Umbral has on display more than 100 pieces of art by respected local artists such as Jorge Montiel, Andrea Vores and Tomas Diaz. Travelers who explore the gallery can then pass through into the hotel’s intimate library with a range of literature on shelves for the browsing. There also is a sound library with its very own vinyl record player, as well as a cinema, playing culturally immersive films from local film festivals. The property also features a 375-square-foot room for intimate meetings and events for up to eight guests and a rooftop terrace for outdoor functions of up to 150 attendees.

Masters of Local Experience

Those wanting to explore the city can consult with one of Umbral’s Experience Curators to immerse themselves into the local culture through unique itineraries, created based on their curiosity type. Whether an epicurean who loves culinary and beverages or pathfinder seeking outdoors adventures, an easy online quiz can identify the guest’s curiosity type to help the curator craft unique experiences for guests. For example, the Experience Curators can organize architectural tours, clandestine art exhibitions and gastronomy tours, as well as musical experiences at local jazz and rock bars.

Guests can lounge on Umbral’s rooftop terrace, complete with an outdoor heated pool, fitness center and a Wellness Bar mixing wide variety of fresh smoothies and juices, such as Deep Detox and spinach-mint or apple-ginger shots to start the day.

Creative Dining

Travelers can opt for comfort food at Terraza Umbral Restaurant, which incorporates local flavors into such traditional dishes as Duck & Sirloin Tacos, Tropical Ceviche and Shrimp Toasts. For after-dinner drinks, guests can then stop by Terraza Umbral Bar – an exclusive mixology rooftop bar inspired by locally legendary bar Limantour. The rooftop bar offers an extensive menu of seasonal cocktails based on Mexican spirits, such as their signature cocktail “Independencia” crafted with mezcal, lemon juice, passion fruit juice and Campari.

Hilton currently has a portfolio of nearly 150 open hotels and resorts to welcome travelers in the Caribbean and Latin America. The centenarian company continues to pursue growth opportunities in the region and currently sees a pipeline of more than 90 hotels throughout the region, including approximately 30 properties in Mexico.

Umbral is part of Hilton Honors so members who book directly through preferred Hilton channels have access to instant benefits, including a flexible payment slider that allows members to manage a combination of points and currency to book a stay, as well as free standard Wi-Fi and access to the Hilton Honors mobile app.

To promote the milestone opening, Umbral has launched a package for that runs through December 30, 2019. The Cross Over the Umbral package includes overnight accommodations, two signature cocktails at the Terraza Umbral Bar, breakfast for two on the hotel’s rooftop and a $50 dining credit. Additionally, guests who book stays between the end of August and start of December will earn 1,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points per night.
